Hi Preston,

Greetings from ManageEngine Desktop Central.

Please sync the Patch DB and then try to scan the machines. If the scanning still gets failed, then please follow the instructions from below link and share me the logs from Linux machine and DC server,

Sync DB : Patch Mgmt --> Update Vulnerability DB --> Update now.

Hello Roobhan,
Sorry for the late reply,
Yes, it is OK to use the Exclude Target / Computers option. I can confirm that it works as expected on my test environment. The problem with it is scalability: what if I have to exclude 50 or even 500 computers? When I select Exclude Target / Custom Group it only shows Users Custom Groups. Would be a great improvement if I could drop-down Computers Custom Groups from there.
Best

Hi Solo,

Thanks for the update on it. Since the Configuration was created for the User based configuration, you can only see the User based Custom Group. Only for the Computer based configuration, you will see Computer Custom Group.

Hi Naveen, Roobhan,
Thank you both for the contribution.
So, to summarize our findings and back to the initial question:
1. It is not possible to have an "Install/Uninstall Windows Software (Computer)" configuration and select a "currently logged on user" option
2. We have only limited flexibility within the "Install/Uninstall Windows Software (User)" configuration to only exclude computers, but not computer custom groups, etc.
I don't see a technical limitation here, it is a matter of software design decision to enhance both configuration types on their filtering options.
Logically, the last question is, are you planning such enhancements in the foreseeable future?

Agent settings

I need some help with configuration settings for my Desktop Central agent and hoping someone here can help me out.

I have a mixed environment in which we have a central office where users would be local to the DC server, for these users the Local office agent would be best.  However, the majority of the staff works as consultants at other company's office buildings.  Since we have no control over their environment we have determined that using the remote office agent would work best.

2 questions come into play that I need help with:

1) Would the best option to use the GPO method to determine the agent and would the "Remote Office" agent be the best to install by default?

2) Can the "Remote Agent" do DNS name resolution or do we need to put in our Public IP address into the configuration?

I hope this makes sense if not I can provide more details.

Hi Solo,

Thank for summarizing the findings. Please find the details below :

1. It is not possible to have an "Install/Uninstall Windows Software (Computer)" configuration and select a "currently logged on user" option

#  Yes. You are correct

2. We have only limited flexibility within the "Install/Uninstall Windows Software (User)" configuration to only exclude computers, but not computer custom groups, etc.

# Yes, you are right.

As of now, we do not have plans to enhance this. However, you can very well raise enhancement feature request by filling up the form below :

Let me know if you need further clarification.

Hi David,

Appreciate your forum post.

From checking on your requirement, you need to create a remote office and then install this agent to those machine to manage the machine remotely.

You can not use GPO for the remote office site. Please refer the detailed information and steps to be done for managing these machines,

Looking forward to assist you.

If we are having all of our users log into the machine (while on network) before they leave the office would a GPO with the WAN agent still work?

Good Afternoon,

Does Desktop Central support MS SQL AlwaysOn yet?  Is there a list of ManageEngine applications which support MS SQL AlwaysOn configurations?  Thank you!

Hi Edward Jewell,

Appreciate your request.

Yes, Desktop Central supports MSSQL long back. By default, Desktop Central will be installed with PGSQL DB, then you can migrate the DB to MSSQL.

Looking forward to assist you.

Execute .bat before installing software

I have a specific software that does not run from a shared folder. I have to copy it locally, and then execute the installer from the local folder. I am trying with a simple bat as a pre-deployment task, but is failing with the error "Failed! : Incorrect function.". I've read a bit on other posts, and it seems I cannot run a bat on a computer configuration, has to be on a user configuration.

Fair enough..then, how is the proper procedure? create a user config to copy the files, and then later run the installer? how can I make sure the copy of the files happens first than the installer?

Thanks.

I need this also.  Can you have Dev add a way to manually scan when in the Automate Patch Deployment?  I ran the first of 5 jobs tonight and the scans will not be done for over 2 hours to start the deployment.  This is very bad.  I need the job to start at 6, do a scan and install all missing patches and do reboots if necessary before job 2 starts 30 min later... It is also an issue when my workstations are set to go off at 3 am every Wednesday and they are still rebooting or wanting rebooting during work hours because the jobs for scanning held up so long.  As of right now we started Job 1 at 6pm and job 3 is about to start at 7pm and job 1 is still running scans and there are only 3-5 servers per job and 5 jobs.  I have these set to run after hours so it minimizes user impact.

Hello Dennis,

Thank you for writing back to us.

The Automate Patch Deployment task will lock first 2 hours from scheduled time to scan the target machines and to download the updates. If you would like APD task to start the deployment in a specific time window then adjust the task start time accordingly and also you may configure the Deployment Window in Deployment policy to make sure systems are not patched after 3.00 AM.

Trust the above information helps. Do let me know if you have a additional questions at the moment. I'll be glad to assist you.

Hi Juan,

Thank you for raising the post. As per your explanation, you want to copy a file on the client machine with User configuration and deploy the installer with User configuration. For this, your need to create a configuration to copy the file on the client machine first (Configurations tab > File Folder Operation Configurations) and after that create a configuration to deploy the software (Software Deployment module).

Configuration will be applied on the order of creation. So, The files will be copied first and then the Software deployment will be processed.

Trust this helps!

Script (.bat) + .reg file

$

Morning!

We are trying to configure automatically the phone extension for our dialer software, getting the extension number from our intranet, and creating a .reg file with the user data and the extension data.

We created a collection with the "custom script" for .bat file, and then the "registry" option to import the .reg file, using a local path with a manageengine variable, that looks like this: "\users\$domainusername\uagentsettings.reg"

The .bat file works, it creates the file on the c:\users\nameoftheuser\uagentsettings.reg.

The import of the .reg file does not work. I guess is because on the "registry" option I cannot specify to run it with elevated privileges, so it gives this error:

One or more Registry File(s) could not be imported with error : dc.db.agent.config.run_as_admin.credentials_not_available

There is another way of doing this?

Thanks!

Hi Juan,

Thank you for the post. First check whether Reg file in Current hive for USER or SYSTEM . Based on that you can decide for User configuration Registry config or Computer configuration Registry config.

Also try to execute the Reg configuration individually first and check the status.

Disabling update on Firefox and Chrome

Has anyone found a way of disabled automatic updates on Firefox and Chrome?

Chrome supports GPO. So you just need to import the Chrome ADMX files on your domain controller, then you can make all sorts of changes.

Firefox, on the other hand, does not support GPO. Your best bet is the tool CCK2. It took me a few times to get it right, but it works very well.

Hi Max,

Thank you for sharing your inputs.

Stephen : You can try Max  suggestion. Apart from that, if you are able find any Registry settings changes which will disable Automate Updates then you can remote execute using Windows 'Registry Configuration'.

Appreciate your understanding.
